That was the thread, with my want of a parse<encoding> that made me
think more about how to actually implement this, hence this post.

Carl:  And I remember that other post from July or so, but I just
remember the removing of the return type of lit() from that post, not
the encoding discussion part.  :)

We do need something though, the namespace thing is irritating and is
causing me to do all kinds of weird macro work to get it generic...
