Custom containers with Spirit X3 (QString)

Is it possible to teach Spirit X3 about custom containers like it was with Qi? It would be more convenient for me to use Qt's QString as my string type. I tried to port the Qi example[*] to X3, but ended up with large quantities of MPL template errors that I didn't understand.
