No, you're missing the point, or perhaps I am missing some sort of
type deduction going on.

One approach through a template function that seems to work, does not
work when captured through an ad-hoc lambda.

Is there type deduction going on when I run the same parser through a
template function instead of the lambda?

It could be, but I'm otherwise unclear whether that's the case. Just
looking for some clarification on that issue whether that's the case.
