No matter what I would recommend a local spam filter.  If I can make a
recommendation without getting into a small religious war, I would
recommend using Thunderbird for all of your local mail.  I've made a
small obsession out of trying different mail reader solutions --
webmail, pine, netscape and mozilla messenger, hordes of popular linux
clients, etc before settling on thunderbird.  It has a plethora of
filtering and junk mail options.

As an alternative, I have switched over to using gmail for all of my
"mailing list" emails -- I'm sure that other ones like yahoo or
hotmail might work for you, but gmail has some great features like a
conversation/threaded  view  that is similiar, yet improved over the
usenet style of threading.

Just my $0.02..

Oh, and I looked at the users@ list just now, and it is set to
discuss, so it shouldn't be vulerable.  Only "unmoderated" lists are
open, and as of today, that should be none of ours.
