At least for me the "recent changes" is the eye catcher everytime I come
across cowiki.org. If I see that nothing changed, I don't look further -
fast, simple, easy.

Having news on the main/start page is a good idea. Take a look at
<http://hibernate.org/>. This arrangement gives me all information on the
first page.
