In my experience, dragons are not slain with a sword like they do in
the movies, but rather with arrows (or in this day and age, bullets)
shot through the eyes.   Flaming arrows are best, but don't expect the
dragon to catch on fire -- it doesn't happen.  Trust me, I know.  
Once a dragon is blinded, they usually will land of their own accord. 
At this point, you can bring out the catapults (or cannons if you want
to break with tradition) and pelt the dragon with incredible force. 
You want to cripple it -- break its wings and legs.  The dragon's main
advantage is the fact that it is typically very mobile.  It looks
pretty fearsome when it's swooping in belching flame and then swooping
back out.  But an oversized blind and wheezing lizard dragging itself
around on one leg is something no one will fear.
