At gmail, when you compose you have the option of rich or plain text. 
If you see a formatting bar (B/I/U, font...) click the << Plain text
link and your email will go out in a more proper, text format.  
Rich/html formatting for should be avoided in emails, *especially*
when dealing with a mailing list, and especially so when dealing with
a technical mailing list that character specific things like source
code is exchanged.
