The reason why multibyte was not tested, implenented or available after the re2c move is the complete lack of tests, real examples, etc. There was a discussion on internals where many persons ask for real use cases of this feature. I don't remember anyone having posted at least one use case (last time I check was on Friday). If you have other use cases for a couple of charsets, please commit them as well. Indeed, and it is one of the last issues we have now for 5.3. It would be nice to have a post on internals about this issue and its status, to explain the changes or what has to be done(not everyone follows the Zend cvs list).
