Well, for the same reason you'd want them anywhere: because they look nicer.

In this case, all it's supposed to do is join up the cross-bars on the

It sounds like there's a bug somewhere in your browser's rendering 
stack. Maybe you can apply a global setting or over-ride stylesheet to 
turn ligatures off locally if you can't find the bug?
