JP, DE, EN happily coexisting, thanks to you guys!

Hi -

I don't have a problem, or any issues at all.  I just wanted to say
thanks to the guys on this list who take the time to write in-depth
emails, with outstanding explanations.

I used the archives to quickly check on something when I was stuck,
and immediately found the answer.  When there is a ton of crap on most
mailing lists, people sniping at each other and just wasting
bandwidth, it's nice to know there's at least one list that works the
way it should! :)

On to the statement about PHP, MySQL, and localized content:
* It works perfectly.

No, really. Using a pretty vanilla installation of PHP 4.3.x on
Solaris, with MySQL 4.0.12, with NONE of the mb_* functions turned on
I have a database-driven site, with back-end administration area, for
three locales: en, jp (shift_jis), de. There are no separate tables
for localized text...English, German and Japanese all living together
in each table.

It all boils down to:
* Have a sound underlying structure in place
* Send the right content-type and content-language headers
* Carefully work with the slash when adding/retrieving JP text

No fancy tuning necessary, although gee, imagine what you could do if
you tuned things! :)
