Differiate language of a string?

Hi,
How do I figure out the language of the string? Can this is done with 
mb_detect_encoding()? Did anyone try that out? I am going to try it 
tonight. Has anyone any issues when using this function? I also need to 
use the mb_convert_encoding() function. Is the detection(chinese, thai) 
and convertion(from utf-8 to ucs-2) correct?
