checking groups

Hi there, I am experiencing some headaches, I am trying to prevent 
access to areas depending on groups however checkGroup is remaining 
false. In my user session groupIds array is empty and I noticed 
checkGroup requires this, any ideas what the issue may be ? I dont 
really need complicated rights checking for one particular section.
