init calls login() and passes the handle along.
the login method checks if the handle is empty, if yes it checks if 
there is a handle in the cookie, if so it contiunues .. else it returns 
with out error ..

if a handle was passed (or read from the cookie) it then sets the error 
status you saw and tries to authenticate the handle. if that success the 
status is overwritten again. if not the error status stays.
