My personal preference would be to add a STRICT_XHTML config option to
Smarty itself, then any such plugin such as this could query the parameter
and decide whether to keep its old default behaviour or force strict XHTML
output. Then we can gradually fix all the plugins without breaking backwards
compatibility.
