I'd reached the same conclusion myself :-)

I still think that, given that Smary doesn't error on TRUE/FALSE/NULL it
should treat them intuitively (and that in my opinion the current behaviour
is non-intuitive).

Unfortunately I find myself in the unfortunate position that everyone who
replied takes a different view, and that without exception those replies
came from people whose views I respect more than my own.

Ah well. The main thing for me is that I've found out why a load of
templates a designer created for me were not behaving the way he expected,
and it wasn't hard to fix the problem nor to re-educate him, so I'll give
this one up now.
