Really? I suspect if you ask your users you'll find a lot of griping about
this. It's really a headache that virtually any typo in a smarty template
produces an error that can only be debugged by opening up an unreadable
compiled template to figure out where the error actually happened.

[Has the list admin setup finally been fixed in recent months? The last time I
tried posting I got a bunch of bounces and all the list admin addresses I
could find -- even postmaster! -- just returned form letters saying to use the
automated systems.]
