Thanks for the input gentlemen.  I guess the two-template solution
(actually three, cause I have message.tpl.txt for the Text-only version
as well!) could work.  I'll probably use that for the "significant"
messages, and perhaps Joe's temporary file solution for quick solutions
where a designer is not likely to be involved.
