What does array_search actually return if a value is not found?

According to online manual etc., I have tried testing it against both false, and -1 using operators like == != === etc., but for whatever reason I can't seem to manage to compare/test it's return value successfully to determine whether or not a value actually exists in an array, and get returned the relevant index/key.
