[zi-dev] How to deal with PECL installations?

ZZ/OSS Installer itself cannot install PECL (http://pecl.php.net) packages aka 
PHP extensions - because it simply has not been created for that purpose and 
I am convinced it should not be able to do so due to security concerns: you 
need root access to install PHP extensions and ZZ/OSS Installer runs as the 
PHP user on top of a Web server...

Nevertheless, it would be easy to implement a plugin for ZZ/OSS Installer that 
bridges the gap and makes use of the PEAR Installer for installation of PECL 
packages. For example, dynamically creating a shell or batch script that 
could be executed via command line prior or after installation of an 
application.

This could also be done on a per-package basis: If a package has a dependency 
to a PECL package aka PHP extension which is missing, the installer could ask 
the user to perform the displayed PEAR installer command to make the 
extension available. A distributor could well bundle PECL packages with his 
application, e.g. for immediate offline installation.

Of course, these are semi-automatic solutions. What would be a fully automatic 
solution that "seemlessly" installs PECL packages withouth requesting any 
help from the user of ZZ/OSS Installer?

Another solution would be, to implement a command line version of ZZ/OSS 
Installer, but I am sceptical about that. There could be many usability 
problems involved, e.g. to configure 40 application parameters via CLI 
wouldn't be fun...
