showchar nonfunctional or undocumented

I spent some time trying to determine what the showchar script was for, and 
have so far failed. I'm wondering if anyone can provide guidance about what 
it's meant to do? 

From reading it, it appears only to cat some postscript code with only nominal 
modification (nothing specific to the font or character name provided). It even 
seems to have Times-Roman hardcoded into it (maybe for rendering output?). 

I'm at a loss. There's no man or info page for it, and --help only provides 
the basic syntax.
