brew installation gives a2ps: cannot find file `level1.ppd'

After installing a2ps with brew on MacOS Ventura Version 13.3 (22E252)

[~]$ a2ps --version
GNU a2ps 4.15.3
Packaged by Homebrew (4.15.3)

most commands result in cannot find file `level1.ppd'

[~]$ a2ps --list=defaults
a2ps: cannot find file `level1.ppd': No such file or directory

although it comes with the installation:

[~]$ brew list --verbose a2ps | grep -i ppd
/usr/local/Cellar/a2ps/4.15.3/share/a2ps/sheets/ppd.ssh
/usr/local/Cellar/a2ps/4.15.3/share/a2ps/ppd/level2.ppd
/usr/local/Cellar/a2ps/4.15.3/share/a2ps/ppd/level1.ppd
/usr/local/Cellar/a2ps/4.15.3/share/a2ps/ppd/README

and the links are there:
