Rob,
Here it is, 10 months later, and I just mentioned this problem 
(secondary to another) on a post on gmain.os.cygwin. The subject line 
referred to \Device\Harddisk4\DR4. (I don't see my post yet.)

This group does not seem to get much traffic, I'm afraid.
