FWIW... I have seen this behavior before, but it's related to the printer /
language and not CUPS.  If the file is huger or very complex, it can cause
the printer to delay every page or so while it renders.  Try using another
language (like PCLXL) as the final type.  my guess is in 1.1 the PPD and /
or the filter was making a huge postscript file.
