OK, that explains it.

Currently GTK+/GNOME does not support authenticated queues.  If you use
the "normal" local queue pointing at the shared queue then there is a Red
Hat add-on that handles authentication after the fact.

So this is still not ours to fix - GNOME just needs to actually support
printing with authentication is all...
