As far as I understand it the root cause why in case of
unfiltered printing the backend only sends the first data file is
that when there is no filter running "before" the backend, then
the backend does not get its input as continuous stream via stdin
instead the backend gets one single input file name in argv[6] and
there is no way to tell the backend that there are more input files.

If always at least one filter is run "before" the backend, the backend
would always get its whole input as one continuous stream via stdin.
