Here's an update: today I printed a single page PDF from the Atril
document viewer, version 1.24.0, and it ended up using the manual tray.

Here's the /etc/cups/ppd/HP_Color_LaserJet_Pro_M252dw_501595_.ppd file
currently present on the debian laptop I printed from:
