PostScript to PDF conversion

I am looking at an alternative for straight Adobe Acrobat. We use the
‘distiller' function extensively and would love to look at GhostScript
seriously. The first time we installed and ran it, the images were
pretty terrible compared to stock Acrobat. When we saw no downsampling
and apparently no other compression options, we figured GhostScript
was destined to be a text and simple graphics–only product. Is this
true? Can someone verify this one way or the other.
