error message when trying to run Ghostscript 6.53

Hi,

I'm attempting to build ghostscript 6.53 for a 486 computer running
LynxOS.  We have a nonstandard build of the Gnu g++ compiler, and a
nonstandard environment with respect to includes and libraries.

After a number of manipulations I have been able to build ghostscript
for the 486 system. When I try to run it, however, I get the following
error:

GNU Ghostscript 6.53: ./src/interp.c(296): Fatal error -20 in gs_interp_init!
GNU Ghostscript 6.53: ./src/interp.c(296): Fatal error -20 in gs_interp_init!

Does anyone have a good idea of what is wrong?
