Thank you. Given that nothing in cidfmap is actually "necessary", I moved the cidfmap file aside and replaced it with an empty file -- and got a similar error involving a different font name. That new name appeared in a file named FAPIcidfmap, and the problem went away when I also replaced FAPIcidfmap with an empty file. Bottom line: the cause was a bug in the way Ghostscript is packaged for this system, not a problem with Ghostscript itself. BTW the cause and cure seem to be the same for the 8.71 package where I originally encountered the problem, except that 8.71 does not have a FAPIcidfmap to replace.
