Well, I don't think I have a problem with escaping the control
characters. I took a .prn file from Windows (created with the "Print
to file" option, from Notepad) and successfully used netcat to print
it, successfully.

Cups is way too over-engineered for my taste. I started my printing
attempts with Cups (and with hplip installed, to get the ppd files).
Using the hpijs version of the ppd file, it complained about some
"Missing color profile". When using the hpcups ppd file, it connects
to the printer and just hangs; the print job has to be Cancelled
manually.

I have not tried using hplip without Cups - hopefully one of these
references will tell me more about it.

Thanks for the references, I will have a look at them.
