Neither of these options, nor both together, makes any difference.

Note also that the test.prn file has _many_ sequences of

 	<esc>*b0W<esc>*b0V

(which seem to be "zero-length graphic" followed by "zero color data
bytes") both before and after a short non-zero-length piece of "color
data" at offset 0x2fdf; the ghostscript output seems to have a single
non-encapsulated data stream starting immediately after the commands

 	<esc>*r1A<esc>*b116y

("start graphics at current cursor" then "advance 116 raster lines" ?
perhaps "advancing beyond where enscript might have placed its header
if I hadn't suppressed that header?).

In that last bit, the "116y" ends at file offset 0x91, and is followed
immediately by what appears to be 2,132 bytes of binary data. The next
escape sequence seems to be nearly at the end of the output, at offset
0x8e5

Based on this observation, it would appear that ghostscript is
generating data in a substatially different format than is expected
by the printer.

Quite frankly, I've already spent much more time on this that I ever
should have needed, and I've dived in deeper than I ever intended.

I am simply giving up completely on ghostscript, in the same manner
as I've already given up on cups. Both are way too complicated and
require too much understanding to accomplish my desired end-goal of
being able to print from my NetBSD system. I will simply continue
to maintain the Windows lap-top for my printing needs, transferring
files as needed.

All the efforts and suggestions provided in this thread were very
much appreciated, but simply insufficient to convince me that there
is an appropriate solution.

If I ever buy another printer, I will insist that it be capable of
printing postscript without any pre-processing.
