Here is how you can install any program that is part of a CentOS package:

Run the command below to ask yum which package contains the program:

  yum provides '*/hpijs'

On my CentOS 7 system, this returns

  1:hpijs-3.15.9-3.el7.x86_64 : HP Printer Drivers
  Repo        : base
  Matched from:
  Filename    : /usr/bin/hpijs
Then install the package with a command like
  sudo yum install hpijs
Do not use a version number unless you want to install an old version.
You might also want to install the 'epel' (Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux) repository. https://www.tecmint.com/how-to-enable-epel-repository-for-rhel-centos-6-5/
If I have a choice between installing from yum, installing from another package manager (like pip for Python), or building from source, I usually use yum because that has been tested to work with the rest of the distribution and won't cause conflicts.

     Thankyou for your time, its tired and I am getting late...

     I have tried this a billion ways.  The documentation says that
the -sIjsserver=PATH is supposed to have the path to the hpijs
server, but 'hpijs' is installed NOWHERE on my system.

     I have cups installed fine, and it talks to the 'Officejet_Pro_8600'
printer just fine in /etc/printcap.

     But the testgs file won't find the hpijs 'server' whatever
that means.  On your system its a binary in /usr/bin.  No such luck
here.

     I have recompliled HPLIP make distclean, ./configure, make and make
install a few times, monitoring for the creation and installation of
hpijs, it shows up nowhere except as a directory in /prnt in the souce
code.

     I have also tried it with FD and outputfile=| lpr.cups to no avail.

     I do NOT want hplip to print, I just want ghostscript to render to a
disk file.

     Running CentOS 7 latest, ghostscript 9.07 and HPLIP 3.18.x latest.
