My experience is (nearly) the reverse.
I show an example.
I tried to convert an eps file iii.eps which contains

  << /PageSize [278 258] >> setpagedevice

to pdf by using ps2pdf.
In the case of -dSAFER, I failed as follows. However, very strangely,
pdf file was created and it seemed to be OK.

If I add -dOLDSAFER,
ps2pdf -dOLDSAFER iii.eps iii.pdf
succeeded without any problem, and the resulting pdf seemed
to be OK.


I built w32 binary with COMPILE_INITS=0.
It is possible that my build is problematic.
I suspect that the new code fails to read iccprofiles in the
SAFER case if compiled with COMPILE_INITS=0, and setpagedevice is contained.
In the case of usual eps without setpagedevice,
ps2pdf foo.eps foo.pdf
succeeds without any problem, so I believe that iccprofiles are read successfully in these cases.
