I wouldn't do such assumpion,
because the author isn't necesserily Peter,
and the mechanizm changed several times after that.
In any case everybody can mistake.
Since now we are who maintain the code,
we should either somehow reach a complete unrerstanding,
or rewrite the code.

I would not consider this as an optimization.
There are anomalies, and they to be fixed before an optimization.
Maybe it needs to unoptimize first.
