The "experiment" I'd love you to analyse is the one I documented:-

test-groff -Tpdf -et ch09.trf  |okular -

Particularly the warnings, errors, and line numbers. As I said previously,
ch09.trf is a minimal example of issues I found when testing building the UTP
Book, so you don't have to do that at all, I've distilled the issue into a
simple example - ch09.trf.

I use okular as my pdf viewer - because the above command (which you can copy
and paste) produces a single page containing a table.
