.hcode stopped working since groff 1.24.0.

$ cat hcode
.pchar a
.hcode a b
.pchar a
$ groff-1.24 hcode 2>&1 | fgrep hyphenation
  hyphenation code: 97
  hyphenation code: 98
$ groff-latest hcode 2>&1 | fgrep hyphenation
  hyphenation code: 97
  hyphenation code: 97
