Since that ticket doesn't exist yet, I'll get a head start on the question
here by observing that I first noticed the problem when observing that the
.hcode lines in the startup file tmac/en.tmac seemed to no longer have any
effect. Those lines were all to map special characters' hyphenation codes to
ordinary characters' ones.
