Follow-up Comment #4:

I haven't thought of a better plan in the past 2 months.  I'm proceeding with
the plan in comment #3.

Warnings can be silenced, and `libgroff`, not `troff`, implements font file
loading and reading.  It _has_ to throw an error if there's a problem.  I've
looked multiple times at finding a way to pass error state around for the sake
of reducing the quantity of diagnostics here, and have never come up with a
good solution.

The maximum 3 diagnostics you can get will fall back down to 2 once the
deprecation itself sunsets in under 2 years.

Expect the fix in my next push.
