.length request produces (to me) interesting output

Dear All,

I happen to come across the output of a request which I do not really 
understand.

Take the following code:

.de CODE
.    length @count "\\$1"
..

\*[CODE 12345678]

\n[@count]

The result is "9" whereas I expected "8". Where is my mistake?
