It's the input stream pointer that's advanced here.  ;-)

My hypotheses are, as a rule, better characterized like the
electromagnetic waves of Wheeler-Feynman absorber theory: half-advanced,
half-retarded.

The time-invariance of that theory is consistent with my pessimistic
feeling that I introduce as many bugs as I fix.

On the other hand, the theory's irreconcilability with causality means I
don't have to wear any of the blame!
