Motivation
----------

There exist a number of synergies between paradigms such as implicit
invocations, aspects, first-class events, asynchronous methods, as
well as design and architectural patterns such as subject/observer and
publish/subscribe respectively. Many of these abstractions have been
used directly or indirectly to devise software systems in an
event-oriented manner. The different paradigms have emerged from
different communities, and with slightly different
motivations. Concurrency and distribution are common driving forces
for event-oriented design. Another motivation is software
modularity. In fact, the decoupling of runtime components, which is
paramount to concurrent or distributed systems, may also translate to
a separation between the software modules used to define these
individual components.

With the ever increasing pervasiveness of reactive, concurrent, and
distributed systems, the goal of this special issue is to publish
novel work in the context of event-oriented software design and
implementation related to any of the above paradigms. Of particular
interest is work which bridges between the different paradigms and
motivations, and helps to clarify the relations between them.


CFP
---

We welcome all submissions on the modular structuring of event-based
programs and systems, notably using aspects, including but not limited
to: software and language design, implementation methods, runtime
systems, program analysis techniques and foundational studies,
software metrics, as well as testing methods, benchmarks and
applications. Special consideration will be given to papers that study
modularity issues in such systems, such as the interplay between
events and aspects. Some specific topics of interest are:

   - design, programming and implementation of modular abstractions, notably
     aspects, for event-based programming
   - event-based programming unifying implicit invocations/events and
     explicit events =

   - analysis and studies of modularity in event-based software
   - runtime support for event-based software
   - advanced modularity for reactive, concurrent and distributed systems
   - aspects and events for dealing with mobility or security
   - foundational models of aspects and events
   - taxonomies for aspects and events
   - software engineering metrics for aspect- and event-oriented
     software development =

   - benchmark and reproduction studies of aspect and event-oriented systems
   - applications of event-based systems that harness advanced
     techniques for modularity in the domains of cloud computing and
     service-oriented systems, ambient systems, mobile computing, etc.

In addition, we welcome papers centered around the creation of
benchmarks for aspect- and event based systems. Such papers must also
include a public release of the benchmarks, as well as detailed
instructions and scripts to execute the benchmarks, for the reviewers
at the time of submission. In this issue we will also accept
reproduction studies of previously published work. Reproductions
studies should contain details of previous work was implemented in a
new system or setting. They should contain, but are not limited to,
the benchmarks presented in the original work. To help foster an open
community implementations should be publicly available at the time of
submission for evaluation by reviewers.
