"Around" advice

Hi,

can anyone clarify the following on "Around" advice in AOP languages?

What all context is available to the advice when it is around a pointcut? Can it access all the local variables of the pointcut and parameters passed to it.

What are the various usages of around advice

I found examples where the return value is being modified before  sending it or pointcut excution is made conditional. Didn't find anything more real than these.
