I analysed in a paper AJHSQLDB; is an aspectj refactoring of hsqldb and is not so small.

Don't know if it's still active.
You could look also on google code at a project i assigned to some graduate students at University of Sannio:
http://code.google.com/p/aophotelsystem/
it is small but it implements distribution, persistence, logging and tracing requirements as aspects.
The project followed follows the Jacobson aop use-case driven development process.
