I can answer the second question.

When a program is executed the operating system call the main function of the program. main is also like any other function and it returns a value to the operating system. if the program returns 0 it is an indication of successful execution of the program. if an error has occured in executing the program we can return another number other than 0. indicating an error has occured.

This can clearly be seen in an unix environment after excuting your program check the value of exit status('echo $?') and find the return value of the latest program executed.
