Absolutely.  And a small list of bullet points will spontaneously give one 
the ability to emerge great OO designs.

Beginners would do best to learn XP (including TDD & Refactoring) and then 
learn good OO principles and patterns and how/when to refactor to 
them.  Along the way, it helps to cultivate an appreciation for simplicity.
