Daniel Goleman tells this story in Working With Emotional Intelligence: A brilliant and successful lawyer had a brain operation to remove a tumor. The surgeon accidentally cut the connection to the amydala, the center or emotion (passion). There were puzzling results. The lawyer had no cognitive defects, yet he "became inept at work, lost his job, and was unable to keep another.He ended up out of work; his wife left him; he lost his house." The neurologist discovered that sin the lawyer had "no feelings about his thoughts, and so no preferences." Goleman goes on to say: <quote> The notion that there is "pure thought," rationality devoid of feeling, is a fiction, an illusion based on inattention to the subtle moods that follow us through the day.
