Around here working harder is measured contract acceleration (positive schedule and cost), the number of tons of wasted shipped ahead of plan, positive earned value on a quarterly basis for all deliverables. At Ball our neighbor, working harder is measured by on time on budget delivery of satellites, at Level 3 working harder is measures by customers per employee per revenue dollar per cost dollar. When Kay asked about XC versus XP, on XP executives, managers, "persons tasked with delivering business value to the stock are seen as undesirable roles, getting in the way of programmers activities, even to the point of "we don't need no stinking CIO's." Here I would hope the managers and execs are seen as the fuel that drives the software and IT business, now deploying Agile from their POV, from the top-down (even middle down) not from the bottom up. BTW both Tope Down and Bottom Up are needed in a strategy focused org, but my POV is not bottom up, but top down to the middle, let the bottom folks (developers) do what they do best write code.
