I can't say I've ever seen anyone lose their job because they voice
their opinion.  I've seen people moved to unattractive jobs, or
socially marginalized in some way (e.g. no longer invited to
participate in certain kinds of decisions).

In the discussions I've had with colleages, most fear being
marginalized more than being fired.

There *is* a power difference in the relationship.  VPs and Directors
can wield their power in a number of ways, and do.

I remember one manager to saying, very loudly, "Don't bring me
problems, bring me solutions!"  He stopped hearing about problems for
which people had no solutions.  I also remember that he was later
furious about the quality of some beta release.  "Why the hell didn't
you people tell me about this?!"
