I have returned to find things were running no worse than when I left. The answer there was simple: ensure that someone else can do my job.

I think we must start with building some redundancy into the organization. Even *some* overlap is helpful, and it highlights those times when missing redundancy would have saved the organization's hide. Once the organization has some redundancy built in, it'll wonder how it ever worked smoothly without it!
