However, pair programming as envisioned by XP combined with collective code ownership mixes the pairs up often and any pair can change the code. So if your "regular" pair is not available, someone else can step in until he/she gets in and the project can go forward. IMO, flex time/scheduling issues are a red herring excuse for people not wanting to try pair programming or not wanting to pair with a specific individual. I have seen this objection raised with pair programming in my last organization. What the real problem is are two coders required to pair with each other over an extended period of time and have potentially conflicting schedules (one comes in early, the other comes in late). The time frame of extended is usually the length of a medium sized project, 8 to 12 weeks. Please note I used the word "potentially conflicting schedules" since this objection comes up when the "forced" pairing is announced to the coders for the first time. ------------------------ Yahoo!
